The OBD II Interface Module with CAN support is a general purpose interface to the vehicle's onboard electronic system. This module interfaces to an offboard host PC or diagnostic tool via an RS232 link with the host providing all of the control and user interface functions. The module is used to collect emission related data that has been stored in the vehicle's ECUs. This product is designed to support inspection and maintenance (I/M) test programs (e.g., in smog check stations).

The ES6505 OBD II Interface Module with CAN support is a general purpose interface to the vehicle's Onboard Diagnostic (OBD) system.

PC/Host Interface
The ES6505 OBD II Interface Module interfaces to a host computer system via an RS232 link, with the host providing all of the control and user interface functions.

Emission related Applications
This product is designed to support emission related inspection and maintenance (I/M) test programs (e.g., in smog check stations), and is being used in many state-run programs across the USA.

The module software supports two basic functions:

• Accesses data required to support Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) programs (smog check)
• Provides all generic OBD II test modes as defined in SAE J1979

The module supports the following I/M test lane functions:

• Initialization of communications with all OBD II ECUs
• Read Commanded Malfunction Indicator Light status (MIL status), Onboard Diagnostic Evaluations (Readiness Tests), Diagnostic Trouble Code count (DTC count), Engine Speed, and Engine Coolant Temperature from OBD II ECUs (SAE J1979/ISO 15031-5 generic test mode 1)
• Read emission Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from OBD II ECUs (SAE J1979/ISO 15031-5 generic test mode 3)
• Read vehicle identification number (VIN), calibration ID (CAL ID), and calibration verification number (CVN) from OBD II ECUs (SAE J1979/ISO 15031-5 generic test mode 9)
• Create the conditions required to conduct an evaporative system leak test (SAE J1979/ISO 15031-5 generic test mode 8)

These functions are performed without any prior knowledge of the vehicle under test or its serial data capabilities. The only requirement is that the vehicle supports one of the OBD II protocols.

• 41.6K PWM J1850 (Ford standard)
• ISO 9141-2 K-Line
• ISO 14230-4 KWP 2000
• ISO 15765-4 CAN

Firmware Update Option
The software resident on the ES6505 OBD II Interface Module is field reprogrammable.

PC Application Software
The ES6505 OBD II Interface Module is provided with cables and embedded software, but the customer is responsible for creating the PC application software that controls the hardware. Upon request, the Interface Control Document (ICD), which defines the communications between a generic PC System and the ES6505 OBD II Interface Module, can be made available.
