Friedhelm Pickhard gives presentation on security orchestration

Friedhelm Pickhard, ETAS Chairman, at the 22nd International Congress of Automotive Electronics in Ludwigsburg

ETAS was a primary sponsor of the 22nd International Congress of Automotive Electronics in Ludwigsburg on June 19 and 20, 2018. Its subsidiary ESCRYPT represented ETAS at an accompanying trade-fair booth, and Friedhelm Pickhard, Chairman of the Board of Management of ETAS GmbH, gave a presentation.

What should automotive manufacturers consider in creating an aligned security concept that will master future challenges in IT security? Friedhelm Pickhard, Chairman of the Board of Management of ETAS GmbH, provided the answer to this question during his presentation at the 22nd International Congress of Automotive Electronics in Ludwigsburg on June 20, 2018. Some 650 high-level managers and decision-makers in automotive electronics attend this event every year. ETAS is one of the main sponsors of the congress in Ludwigsburg.

How is centralized security management similar to conducting?

During his presentation, Pickhard compared centralized security management with the job of an orchestra conductor, who must foster and lead musicians.

“Automotive manufacturers are already orchestrating the processes and needs in their core business. Going forward, it’ll be necessary to manage, or rather conduct, all the activities that concern automotive security. Companies must simultaneously coordinate many different parameters on three levels: technology, processes, and organization,” said Pickhard.

Integrated strategy for mastering security challenges

The ETAS Chairman concluded by saying that companies can master the security challenges of disruptive technologies only if they rely on a “complete ensemble” that is created gradually, developed holistically, and conducted with all stakeholders in mind. He added that sufficient mastery and comprehensive management of security risks, or security orchestration, lays the foundation for successfully tackling the technological challenges of tomorrow, electric mobility, and developments such as autonomous and connected driving en route to the automotive future. In this regard, Pickhard was primarily driving at the areas of expertise and the complete package offered by Cyber Security Solutions, the new portfolio of solutions that ETAS began offering in March 2018 under the ESCRYPT brand.

In addition to Friedhelm Pickhard’s presentation, the booth of ETAS subsidiary ESCRYPT registered a good attendance by visitors on both days of the accompanying trade fair.
