How a North-American OEM accelerates advanced braking system development with ETAS INCA and XETK integration
A global leader in the automotive industry, embarked on a project to develop its own in-house algorithms for an advanced Electronic Braking Control Module (EBCM) for its new generation of EV and autonomous vehicles. The core challenge was to leverage their existing and trusted ETAS toolchain from the powertrain domain for this new chassis application. ETAS provided a crucial XETK integration, enabling the North-American OEM to seamlessly adapt their established workflows and accelerate development.
At a glance
Challenge
The customer needed to apply its established powertrain measurement and calibration toolchain to a new, in-house developed braking control system that utilized a third-party ECU, a task for which their existing setup was not configured.
Solution
An integrated ETAS solution featuring an XETK integration, INCA for measurement and calibration, EHOOKS for bypass functionality, and ES523/ES4xx hardware for comprehensive data monitoring.
Customer achievement
Avoided significant investment in a new toolchain and training, enabling the reuse of established processes across multiple domains (powertrain and chassis) and accelerating function calibration and development.
The challenge
As the North-American OEM developed its proprietary braking algorithms for the first time, they faced a significant integration hurdle. The new system's Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) was built on an ECU from a supplier, which handled the hardware input/output (HWIO), while the OEM developed the core control logic. The primary objective was to reuse their well-established and efficient ETAS tool environment (INCA, MDA, EHOOKS) for this new brake application, a task that required a specialized interface.
The solution
ETAS delivered a tailored solution centered around the XETK S20.1B integration for the brake control unit. This powerful interface enabled the OEM’s and supplier’s engineers to calibrate the ECU seamlessly using INCA and MDA, and to leverage bypass functionality with EHOOKS for rapid prototyping and development. To ensure comprehensive data acquisition, the solution was augmented with an ES523 module for CAN-FD monitoring and ES4xx measurement modules for precise sensor signal analysis, creating a complete and robust measurement and calibration setup.
Customer achievements
The ETAS solution allowed the OEM to preserve its existing, proven tool and process chain, completely avoiding the substantial costs and time associated with acquiring and learning a new toolchain. This continuity meant that engineers could work efficiently across multiple vehicle domains, like powertrain and chassis, using a single, familiar tool. Most importantly, the EHOOKS bypass capability facilitated faster function calibration and development iterations between the OEM and its supplier, significantly streamlining a complex, multi-company collaboration.
Conclusion
The successful collaboration between the OEM and ETAS demonstrates the strategic value of an adaptable and scalable toolchain. By providing a key integration solution, ETAS empowered the OEM to innovate in the critical area of vehicle braking while maximizing the return on their existing tool investments. This project reinforces the strong partnership and sets a precedent for future advancements in software-defined vehicle development.
