ETAS develops AI-based Technical Authoring Toolchain for the automotive industry in collaboration with Microsoft

Stuttgart, November 11, 2025 – ETAS GmbH, a leading provider of automotive software development solutions, is developing its new AI Technical Authoring Toolchain in cooperation with Microsoft. The goal is to fundamentally enhance the creation of technical documentation in the automotive industry through the use of artificial intelligence and to set new quality standards.

Expertise for the future of documentation

ETAS brings extensive experience in developing and delivering software solutions and services for technical vehicle documentation, as well as a well-established customer base in the automotive sector. Microsoft complements this with state-of-the-art cloud and AI technologies, as well as deep platform expertise. Together, the two companies are creating a solution that is precisely tailored to the needs of the automotive industry.

Greater precision, consistency, and efficiency

For a fast and efficient market launch of new vehicle functions, it is essential that technical documentation is also created as efficiently and timesaving as possible. The evolution toward software-defined vehicles not only increases software complexity, but also significantly expands the scope and complexity of technical documentation. A recent example from the industry illustrates this: a single automotive manufacturer must produce several million pages of technical documentation annually for numerous new vehicle models. Due to the increasing complexity of modern vehicles, the volume per model has more than tripled over the past ten years. While these documents do not always need to be written from scratch, searching, analyzing, and updating existing materials remains an extremely time-consuming manual process - a process that could be reduced by up to 75% with the jointly developed solution.

A distinctive advantage

This collaboration combines ETAS’s deep domain expertise with Microsoft’s powerful cloud and AI infrastructure. The focus is on complete end-to-end automation and a scalable, market-ready product that goes far beyond the scope of a pilot project.

Planned activities and projects

In the coming months, ETAS and Microsoft will jointly implement initial prototypes and test them in close coordination with selected OEMs. Following successful validation, customer roll-out will begin in 2026, followed by a global market launch from 2027. Continuous development ensures that the solution always complies with current regulatory requirements and incorporates technological advancements.

Greater efficiency for technical documentation through collaboration

Jürgen Hornung, Solution Field Manager, Information and Diagnostics at ETAS, explains: “With the AI Technical Authoring Toolchain, we are establishing a new foundation for technical documentation in the automotive industry. The increasing complexity of modern vehicles is leading to exponential growth in technical documentation. Our collaboration with Microsoft enables us to drastically reduce manual effort—accelerating time-to-market for new features and significantly increasing process efficiency.”
