ETAS supports Eclipse SDV Hackathon Chapter Three: One hackathon, two cities – Porto and Berlin

As a committed member of the Eclipse SDV Working Group, ETAS is proud to support the third chapter of the Eclipse Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) Hackathon, taking place from September 30 to October 2, 2025. This year’s event introduces an exciting new format: for the first time, the hackathon will be held simultaneously in two European cities—Porto and Berlin—enabling participants to collaborate and innovate in parallel across both locations.
About the Challenge
The Eclipse SDV Hackathon brings together automotive software enthusiasts from across Europe to experiment with state-of-the-art SDV tools and blueprints, build innovative features, explore emerging technologies, and enjoy hands-on coding. The event will be fully streamed between both venues, ensuring seamless interaction and shared energy. Each city will feature its own Hack MC, a dedicated team of Hack Coaches, and on-site support staff.
Over two and a half days, participants will be guided by coaches from leading OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and technology companies including ETAS, Microsoft, Elektrobit Automotive, Eteration, and Red Hat. The hackathon features two main tracks—SDV Tooling and SDV Blueprints—where experienced mentors help teams bring real-world use cases to life using open-source automotive software projects.
Hack Challenges
Virtual SDV Lab Challenge
Participants are invited to design, implement, and demonstrate an SDV feature in the Automated Driving/ADAS domain within a realistic virtual vehicle platform. The challenge includes working with large data payloads (such as camera images) and exploring advanced technologies like zero-copy shared-memory transports.
Prerequisites: Python basics, Carla Simulator, Virtual Test Environment
Projects: Kuksa, ThreadX, Ankaios Dashboard, Velocitas, Ankaios, uProtocol, Zenoh, Carla Sim, openBSW
Mission: Update Possible Challenge
This challenge focuses on designing an open end-to-end OTA (Over-the-Air) update system using Eclipse Symphony, uProtocol, and orchestrators such as Ankaios and Muto. Participants will address real-world requirements for security and regulatory compliance while pushing updates from cloud to car.
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of container technologies; familiarity with project documentation; Linux developer setup
Projects: Ankaios, Ankaios Dashboard, Symphony, Zenoh, uProtocol, ThreadX, openBSW, Muto
ETAS’s Commitment
By supporting this event as part of the Eclipse SDV Working Group, ETAS continues to drive innovation in open standards and modern software development for the automotive industry. The hackathon provides a unique platform for collaboration and hands-on experience with cutting-edge open-source projects shaping the future of mobility.
