The future of vehicle software is safe and open

ETAS is a founding member of the S-CORE (Eclipse Safe Open Vehicle Core) project, where we actively contribute our expertise to develop and implement a future open-source core stack. This initiative, uniting leading OEMs and suppliers, lays the foundation for an open-source software ecosystem and a code-first approach to build state-of-the-art automotive software platforms for the software-defined vehicle.

Automotive OEMs face immense time-to-market and innovation pressure, compounded by duplicated software efforts, vendor lock-in, and resource-intensive safety/security compliance. Fragmented development and a lack of stable software foundations hinder feature transferability, while past in-house full-stack attempts often led to unsustainable complexity.

Open Source Software (OSS) presents a powerful solution. It enables the industry to define standards directly through code, not just specifications, thereby significantly accelerating development and reducing costs. OSS is generally more mature, secure, and reliable than proprietary alternatives, thanks to global collaboration and rapid bug resolution. Crucially, initiatives like the S-CORE project are directly addressing challenges concerning OSS use in safety-critical systems, paving the way for robust, collaborative, and adaptable automotive software platforms.

S-CORE enabled

S-CORE (Eclipse Safe Open Vehicle Core) is an open-source project within the Eclipse SDV Working Group, dedicated to developing a safe, open vehicle software core for the automotive industry. Its primary objective is to deliver safety-certifiable middleware and foundational software components crucial for next-generation vehicles. S-CORE uniquely addresses both in-vehicle software and the essential processes and documentation required for functional safety certification.

Orchestrating AUTOSAR and OSS

ETAS strategically unites the strengths of AUTOSAR and open-source software (OSS) to achieve optimal results in automotive development. We leverage robust AUTOSAR solutions for safety-critical and hard real-time functionalities. At the same time, we utilize open-source technologies – including those proven in safety-critical environments such as S-CORE – to cover the full spectrum of application requirements. Seamless integration is ensured through standardized APIs. This dual approach delivers a powerful and flexible software architecture, accelerating innovation while maintaining reliability and performance for the future of mobility.

“We firmly believe that open collaboration at eye level is key to successfully mastering the challenges of software-defined vehicles.”
Dr. Thomas Irawan, President and Chairman of the ETAS Board of Management
