Traditional distributed E/E architectures—characterized by numerous individual ECUs dedicated to specific functions—are reaching their limits in terms of scalability, flexibility, and efficiency. The transition to a zonal E/E architecture marks a fundamental shift: instead of function-specific control units scattered throughout the vehicle, powerful zone controllers are introduced. These controllers manage multiple functions within defined physical zones and connect via high-speed Ethernet networks.

This new approach significantly reduces wiring complexity and enables centralized data processing, paving the way for seamless over-the-air updates and rapid deployment of new features. By decoupling hardware from software, the zonal architecture supports true application portability and future-proofs vehicles for upcoming innovations.
