From weeks to days: Calibrate flex-fuel engines faster

Flex-fuel engines must deliver reliable performance across fuel blends ranging from pure gasoline to high-ethanol fuels. Calibrating the ignition angle for every combination of engine speed, load, and ethanol content creates a large measurement space. Engineers need to identify the thermodynamic optimum while remaining within the knock limit without spending weeks on the test bench.

Key challenges

Large calibration space

Numerous combinations of fuel blend, speed, load, and ignition angle must be evaluated.

Limited test bench capacity

Measuring every operating point manually requires considerable time and resources.

Complex engine behavior

Knock limits and thermodynamic behavior must be modeled accurately across the full operating range.

Quality requirements

Reducing measurement effort must not compromise calibration accuracy or engine performance.

ETAS provides an integrated, data-driven workflow for automating flex-fuel engine calibration. ASCMO-EXPEDES together with INCA FLOW creates an optimized Design of Experiments to reduce the number of required test bench measurements. INCA together with measurement hardware such as the F-ETK state-of-the-art M-ETK capture time-synchronized ECU and engine data, providing the basis for detailed analysis.

ETAS ASCMO uses the collected measurement data to generate accurate machine learning-based data or hybrid models of engine behavior, including knock limits and thermodynamic optima. The ASCMO toolchain and embedded AI Coder then use these models to calculate optimal ignition maps and apply them directly to the ECU. This connects measurement, modeling, optimization, software models and calibration in one repeatable workflow.

Your benefits

Reduce test bench time

Shorten calibration and validation from several weeks to only a few days.

Improve calibration accuracy

Generate precise ignition maps for better fuel efficiency and engine performance.

Standardize the workflow

Make calibration repeatable, scalable, and less dependent on individual expert knowledge.

Accelerate new variants

Adapt engines faster for new derivatives and markets with different fuel standards.

By combining targeted measurements with data-driven modeling and automated optimization, engineers can calibrate flex-fuel engines faster while maintaining accuracy across the complete fuel range.
